How to set up OpenVPN on Asus VPN Fusion

In this article, you will learn how to set up an OpenVPN connection on VPN Fusion. VPN Fusion allows simultaneous connections to multiple VPN servers and device-specific VPN tunnel assignments. This feature provides broad network protection without the need for installing additional software and is available on some Asus router models as an update.

To set up OpenVPN on Asus VPN Fusion, you first need an active Surfshark subscription. You can find the available plans on Surfshark’s pricing page.

We will go through these VPN Fusion setup steps:

  1. Get your credentials
  2. Choose a Surfshark server
  3. Configure the VPN Fusion OpenVPN client
  4. Ensure that the connection is successful

Get your credentials

  1. Enter the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN > Manual Setup > Router > OpenVPN to generate your credentials.

  2. Once there, make sure that you are in the Credentials tab and click on Generate credentials.

NOTE: Keep this tab open for now, as we'll need it later.

Choose a Surfshark server

  1. Open the same page on another browser tab, go to the Locations tab, and locate the server that you wish to connect to.

  2. Click on the download icon to the right of the server name and click on Download UDP

Configure the VPN Fusion OpenVPN client

  1. Log in to your Asus router's web interface. You can access it by entering your router's default gateway IP address into your browser's URL bar. By default, it normally is 192.168.8.1.

Alternatively, you can enter this address: http://router.asus.com/

  2. Once there, you'll have to log in. By default, the username and password both are 'admin'.

  3. On your router's web panel interface's left side, look for the VPN option and click on it. Select the VPN Fusion tab.

  4. Configure a new connection by pressing on Add profile.

  5. Next up, select the VPN Type to OpenVPN and proceed to fill in the details like so:

Connection name: You can type in a name that you desire. (For example, SurfsharkVPN)
    VPN Type: OpenVPN

For the username and password, you must use the credentials generated in the Find your login details section.

  6. Import the server configuration file by clicking on Import .ovpn file from the choose a Surfshark server section.

  7. Configure which devices get affected by the freshly configured VPN tunnel. To do so, click on the edit pen in the Device section.

  8. A list of devices connected to your router will appear. Tick the box next to the devices that you wish to be affected by the VPN connection.

  9. Press Apply and Enable.

  10. Toggle the slider to enable the VPN connection.

Make sure the connection is successful

We always recommend checking if Surfshark VPN is working after setting it up for the first time. You can easily do it by performing Surfshark IP leak test and a DNS leak test. For your convenience, both are available on our website.
