How to enable 2FA on your Surfshark account

In this tutorial, you will learn how to set up 2FA (two-factor authentication) on your Surfshark account. If you're unsure why you should do this, check what 2FA is and why it is important.

We will go through the following:

  1. Setting up 2FA via an authentication application (Google Authenticator or Authy)
  2. Setting up 2FA with your email address

 

Setting up 2FA via an authentication application (such as Google Authenticator or Authy)

  1. Log in to your account at Surfshark login page.

  2. Go to Account Settings.

  3. Click Edit next to 2FA.

  4. Select the Authentication app in the following window.

  5. A QR code will appear on your screen. You will need to scan it using an authentication app.

  6. Now go to the Google Play Store if you are using an Android phone or the Apple App Store if you have an iPhone, and install the Google Authenticator app.

  7. Open the Google Authenticator app, and click on the circle with a plus sign.

  8. Select the Scan a QR code option, and your phone camera will open. Point it to the QR code on your desktop.

    A new authentication profile named Surfshark will appear automatically.

  9. Get back to your account at Surfshark dashboard. To confirm the activation of 2FA, enter the six digits you see under the Surfshark authentication profile. Click Next.

  10. Download recovery codes in a text file. Click Done when the download finishes.

Next time you log in to your account, you will also need to enter a temporary verification code after entering your username and password. Open the Google Authenticator app and enter the code under the Surfshark profile.

 

Setting up 2FA with your email address

 

  1. Log in to your account at Surfshark login page.

  2. Go to Account Settings.

  3. Click Edit next to 2FA.

  4. Click on Email Address.

  5. You will now receive an email with a 6-digit verification code. Head to your inbox and open the latest letter from Surfshark.

  6. You will need to enter this code in the following step of the 2FA verification process. Enter the code and click Next.

  7. Download recovery codes in a text file. Click Done when the download finishes.
