How to set up OpenVPN on GL.iNet router (2.x firmware)

In this tutorial, you will learn how to configure the Surfshark VPN tunnel on your GL. iNet router with 2.x firmware.


To proceed, you need to have a GL.iNet router running 2.x firmware and an active Surfshark subscription, which you can purchase on Surfshark's pricing page.

You will learn how to:

  1. Get your credentials
  2. Choose a Surfshark server
  3. Configure the VPN
  4. Ensure your connection was successful

Get your credentials


NOTE: These are not your regular credentials, such as your email and password.

  1. Enter the Surfshark login page and log in. Then, click on VPN > Manual Setup > Router > OpenVPN to generate your credentials.

  2. Once there, make sure that you are in the Credentials tab and click on Generate credentials.

    NOTE: Keep this tab open as we'll need it later.

 

Choose a Surfshark server

 

  1. Open the same page on another browser tab, go to the Locations tab, and locate the server that you wish to connect to.


  2. Click on the download icon to the right of the server name and click on Download UDP. 
     

 

Configure the VPN

 

  1. Log in to your GL. iNet router by entering the following IP: 192.168.1.1 

    NOTE: The gateway IP might be different for your particular router. Check the backside of your router to find the default gateway of your router.

  2. Log in to the router using the default router credentials. If you are not aware of your router credentials, you will find them at the backside of your router.

  3. Once you log in, go to the OpenVPN tab.

  4. Import the OpenVPN configuration file (refer to Choose a Surfshark server part of this article).

  5. If the configuration file upload is successful, a green note will appear stating that the file has been imported.

  6. Enter the Surfshark service credentials (refer to Get your credentials section in this article)

  7. Once you have entered your credentials, a VPN configuration page will open. Check the Enable and Force VPN options.

  8. Click the green arrow and choose one of the configuration files from the drop-down menu. Apply the settings.

  9. Once the VPN connection is established, you will see the OpenVPN status as connected, as well as sent/received data.

Ensure the connection is successful

 

We always recommend checking if Surfshark VPN is working after setting it up for the first time. You can easily do it by performing Surfshark IP leak test and a DNS leak test. For your convenience, both are available on our website.
